thursday 13

Thirteen Things I need to do this week to prepare for Christmas!

1. Put up the tree!

Now that it’s just my husband and I, I’m the one that puts up the tree because he’s not all that in to decorating. I use a fake tree, which works well for me because I never have to worry about it being to heavy to heft in by myself! I’ll get the lights up on the tree the same day.

2. Finish at least two gifts.

I knit…a LOT. I step it in to high gear during the holidays and I’ve got a huge queue of projects. This week I hope to finish a baby sweater for a friends daughter and the other fair isle mitten for my mother in law!

3. Begin my ornament challenge!

I lost about two-thirds of my christmas ornaments year before last when my storage system failed and water damage ate everything. I’m challenging myself to make at least 24 ornaments this year, from the 1st of December ’til the 24th. Wish me luck!

4. Bake!

Or more like begin preparations to bake. I need to start stocking up again since my baking supplies always take a blow during Thanksgiving! Chocolate chips, peanut butter and the requisite flour and sugar are low.

5. Start planning my shopping excursions.

I know, a lot of people are already finished! Every year I plan to start early and every year I’m left planning at the beginning of December. Luckily, I hand-craft most of my gifts and my list for buying is pretty small but it still warrants some consideration!

6. Cards!

I’d like to make a few holiday cards for my closest friends and family this week. I only need about a dozen, the rest can be store-bought. I’m thinking something white, with shades of blue, origami or snowflakes 🙂

7. Cleaning!

I’m doing some deep cleaning to get in to the holiday spirit. The cleaner my house is, the happier I am and the more I can enjoy what I’ve already decorated. Floor scrubbing is in my future!

8. Me time.

I need to remember to take a break and relax every now and again. If I don’t remind myself I don’t and then I wonder why I’m so stressed out and grumpy!

9. Get in Touch.

Sometimes I get so busy during this time I forget what it’s all about. I need to make a point to get in touch with a couple of close friends and see if we can spend some time together.

10. Blog!

Busy is the biggest theme here, isn’t it? When I get busy I forget about my blog. This makes me sad because I ENJOY blogging and i don’t like falling out of touch with the few bloggers that actually visit!

11. Decorate my blog!

I’ve been meaning to do this for the past week, but I’ll definitely get to it this coming week. I really really love Christmas and I want my blog to reflect that.

12. One-on-One.

I want to spend a night or two just hanging out with my hubby. A lot of times we’re both tired when he gets home from work and I’ll knit and stay on the computer while he’s zoning on the couch watching TV. This week I want to you know, actually interact with him! We always have a blast when we play board games/video games together so I think some popcorn, a game and some snuggly clothes are in order!

13. Take notice.

I want to enjoy seeing the holiday take hold. Go out to see some of the lights the early-birds have put out, check out one of the parades that’ll be held down-town. Get a picture or two of the cute little banners the city puts up on the light posts.

Thirteen Things I love about Ravelry

I finally got my invite to Ravelry yesterday, so my mind is swimming with all the great stuff about it! In honor of my new addiction I present 13 things I love about Ravelry!

1. Ravelry is a fantastic new site in it’s Beta stage where knitters and crocheters can gather.

2. You have a “Notebook” where you can catagorize your projects, yarn, books, needles/hooks so you can get really organized!

3. There is a pattern area where you can browse by tags to find new things to make.

4. You can check out the yarn section to find new yarns you haven’t tried or substitutes for ones you don’t like/can’t afford.

5. You can meet new people and friend them.

6. There are forums of all sorts to ask questions and give advice.

7. There are groups up the wazoo and if you don’t find one you’re looking for, you can start your own!

8. You can find just about anything and if you can’t, chances are there’s someone there that can help you find it.

9. It’s new and shiny to me and I can spend hours looking at new things.

10. It feeds my fiber/pattern/knitting/crochet addiction!

11. It’s free!

12. You have to wait for your invite once you sign up since there’s so many people joining, but it’s worth it!

13. It takes so many of the things I love and puts it in one place. It’s handy, dandy and super awesome so anyone that crochets or knits should definitely sign up!

Thirteen Crafts I’ve yet to try1. Macrame. When I was younger I thought it was ugly because all I ever saw were owl wall hangings and gigantic plant hangers. I’ve since learned that there’s a whole slew of cool things that can be made using macrame!

2. Tablet Weaving. I have a few friends in the SCA that do this but I’ve never gotten past making the cards for it and then I got really really confused.

3. Lampworking. Again, I’ve seen friends do it but I’ve never tried and I think it’s amazing!

4. Pottery. I admit that my first thought when I think of using a potters wheel is that oh-so-famous scene in Ghost. I’d like to try my hand at making pottery, sans a spectral dirty dancer.

5. Woodworking, in general. There’s so many cool woodcrafts out there!

6. Dollhouse miniatures. The idea has always intrigued me, but I haven’t really known where to start. I had grand plans of my hubbin’ helping me build a doll house, but they never came to fruition. Maybe I’ll dig the plans out and give it another try!

7. Quilting. Now, this one’s a little fudgy. I’ve quilted, I have made a quilt, but I have never seriously quilted. I’d like to find a pattern I fall in love with and piece and quilt it by hand.

8. Silversmithing. I don’t know that I’ll ever have the opportunity, but I’d like to try it someday.

9. Spinning yarn with a wheel. I’ve used a drop spindle on and off for the past year, but what I REALLY want to try is a spinning wheel. I’ve heard great things about it.

10. Altering books. I dabbled in this when I was making ATC’s regularly, but just last night I sat down and decided to start working on my first altered book. It was a little scary at first to feel like I was “defacing” it, but I’m already having fun and can’t wait to try some new techniques.

11. Soap making. I’ve done the whole melt and pour thing, but what I’d really like to try is some cured soaps. Me and a friend went crazy one summer and bought all the supplies and checked every book we could out of the library but it just never happened.

12. Weaving. Admittedly, I don’t know a whole lot about weaving, but it intrigues me and I’d like to try it someday.

13. Doll Making. It kind of, sort of goes along with the whole doll house thing, but I want to learn how to make dolls eventually. Not just miniatures, but all different sizes. My mom has an old Madame Alexander doll and after helping her re-joint her first baby doll I became intrigued with the process.

Maybe someday I’ll tackle all of these crafts, maybe not. Either way it’s good to know that there will probably ALWAYS be a new craft waiting for me to try.

Thirteen of my favorite NES games

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street. There weren’t very many things I’d rather do on a late Saturday night than fight against the infamous, evil Freddy Krueger. I’d turn off all the lights and turn up the volume. It wasn’t the most popular NES game, but I was a rabid fan of the movies and I think that the game was fun, if not more than a little cheesy.

2. Duck Hunt. I admit it…I was a cheater of the worst kind. I’d get super close to the screen and my score showed it. I had one of the classic guns for the system and when the orange guns came out I thought it was the strangest thing.

3. Friday the 13th. Another of my favorite horror games. So the storyline is horribly flawed, and the gameplay is no different from many of the other side-scrollers, but I enjoyed it.

4. Jeopardy! I’ve always loved trivia, and after watching the show with my parents for years I was thrilled when I saw that they’d made a game. The down-side? After playing so many times you memorize the answers.

5. Marble Madness. This was such an addicting game! I tried to copy my success like with other games, but what worked once might not work again. This was one of my very favorites.

6. Mickey Mousecapades. I always thought the game was a little strange, but I loved it anyway. Minnie was stolen at the most inopportune moments and Mickey always played the valiant rescuer.

7. Paperboy. The game wasn’t particularly exciting, but there was a certain satisfaction to be had by making sure all the houses got papers. Every once in awhile I would purposely break windows and knock people down because it was funny.

8. Q*Bert. I loved this game, but wasn’t very good at it. I hated Coily.

9. Simpsons: Bart Vs. the Space Mutants. When the Simpsons craze first began (after Tracy Ullman of course) I was as smitten as just about everyone else. I liked this game because the feel was so similar to the cartoon.

10. Super Mario Bros. My first foray into Nintendo! I can’t think of a single person who doesn’t like this game. I was hooked and spent months perfecting my game to get the quickest time.

11. Super Mario Bros. 2. I was a big fan of the Mario games and this one, though not as good as the others, was a lot of fun too. I liked that you could pick from four characters and each of them had a special purpose. I always chose the Princess and I’m convinced that Mario Bros. 2 is the reason why I always pick the Princess when playing Mario games now.

12. Super mario Bros. 3. My favorite of the Mario Bros. games. I was amazed when I saw the game for the first time, in the movie The Wizard. The graphics were amazing and the gameplay was fantastic! I loved all the different costumes Mario could change in to. The Tanuki suit was the best.

13. Yoshi’s Cookie. Ever since the first time I saw Yoshi in a Mario game I thought he was adorable. Yoshi’s Cookie was a great puzzle game and I could zone on it for hours.

Thirteen Things on my Desk

1. Scissors. I always keep a small pair of scissors on my desk to snip yarn with because that’s where I do most of my crafts.

2. A small jar of amaretto pecan honey butter. My best friend brought it back from Texas with her and it’s kind of made its home on my desk.

3. My address book. It holds every important phone number and address I’ve ever written down.

4. The Sims 2. I haven’t played this much, but when I do I become almost obsessive. That’s why I’ve only made three families lol!

5. My stuffed puppy I won at the fair last year. He sits upon my computer tower and every so often I’ll reach up and rub his ears because he’s so soft!

6. My puppys harness. She’s a strapping mutt and SO much easier to control with a harness. It wound up there after I readjusted it the last time.

7. A bottomless cup of coffee. I drink a lot of coffee and there’s almost always a cup sitting here.

8. A single size 10.5 knitting needle. I don’t knit with this…I scratch my back with it. What can I say? It does the job!

9. A crocheted potholder. I’m not sure how this ended up here, but chances are it’s from bringing a hot plate in during lunch one day.

10. A roll of Scott tissue. It’s good for sniffly noses or to wipe up spilled coffee…useful!

11. Neutrogena honey lip balm. Arizona dries out everything and I’m never far from a lip balm or chap stick.

12. Fiber-fill. I knit a little alien stuffie not long ago and the leftovers never made their way back to the box.

13. Our Nintendo Wii usb connector. We like to go online with our Wii sometimes, but often the connector gets unplugged so another usb cable can be plugged in. It sits quietly, begging to be plugged in and played.
